January 15, 2009 Soma Weiss Student Research Day Program
69th Annual Soma Weiss Student Research Day Abstract Book BASIC OR CLINICAL SCIENCE RESEARCH AT HMS Extensive bench, clinical, and translational research opportunities for medical and dental students are available at Harvard Medical School and M.I.T. Students can organize full-time summer research, part-time research during the academic year, and full-time year-long research. Each society has two research fellows who sit on the Faculty Committee for Student Research. They are available to assist students in developing research proposals. The Committee is responsible for the evaluation, approval, and funding of student research proposals. Over 100 students receive OEP funds for their research projects each year. Each year, HMS and HSDM celebrate student research at Soma Weiss Student Research Day. In 2010, the event will be on Thursday January 14 beginning at 1:30 PM in the Tosteson Medical Education Center Atrium with a student poster session. Following this, four students will present their research. Any student considering clinical or basic science research should speak with their Society Research Fellow before approaching a principal investigator. The Office of Enrichment Programs (OEP) database contains hundreds of listings for part-time and full-time research opportunities. In September and December the OEP contacts the entire medical and dental school faculty to solicit research opportunities, which are entered in the database. Students can also access descriptions of previous student projects on the database to obtain information about a particular lab or project. OEP uses endowment funds to support student stipends, and not all projects qualify for funding. Thus, please contact Kari Hannibal (kari_hannibal@hms.harvard.edu) for additional information before you commit to a project. Many internal and external research fellowships are available for HMS students, including the following: Doris Duke / PASTEUR One-Year Fellowship A mentored hands-on clinical research experience supplemented by didactic curriculum; one year fellowship for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year HMS students. Stipend package totals more than $34,500, including the health insurance reimbursement. PASTEUR Summer Program For First Year Students A summer mentored hands-on clinical research program for first-year HMS students completing their first year of medical school. Participants receive a stipend of $4000 for the summer. Howard Hughes Medical Institute - NIH Cloisters Program Also known as the Cloister Program, Research Scholars spend nine months to a year on the NIH campus, conducting basic, translational or applied biomedical research under the direct mentorship of senior NIH research scientists. This day honors the memory of Soma Weiss (1899-1942), an inspiring teacher and physician at HMS and an ardent supporter of student research. Students will showcase their research and international projects supported by university funds. Effective networking is an important part of your professional development and this day provides you with a unique opportunity to meet with faculty, staff, and peers from the greater Harvard community. With the exception of community service projects, any student who has received University funds in 2008 for support of projects is required to submit an abstract and a poster for the 69th Annual Soma Weiss Research Day. Soma Weiss Research Day celebrates all student research efforts, including but not limited to, bench and clinical research, public health, service learning, and preventive medicine here and abroad. This also includes the month long efforts of those students who choose to do our intensive language courses. The day begins with a keynote address by a prominent physician or scientist. Then four students present their research. The keynote speaker and student presentations are held from 1:00 to 2:45 PM in the Carl Walter Amphitheater. Next is a poster session in the Tosteson Medical Education Center Atrium from 2:45 to 4:30 PM. Any MD, PhD, DMD, or MD/PhD student enrolled in Harvard/MIT is eligible to submit an abstract or abstracts. The research presented at Soma Weiss Day may have been done at another institution. The emphasis here is not on finished projects, but rather on exposing the community to your research efforts. Presentation of works in progress is encouraged. Additionally, four students are selected by the Academic Societies’ Committee for Student Research to give ten minute oral presentations on their work.
